72 Hours in Santorini
Santorini is beautiful and romantic destination that tops many travel bucket lists, so I was elated when I included Santorini in our Honeymoon plans. Like I mentioned in my previous post about our time in Athens, you'll definitely need more than a few days in Greece. Of all the destinations within our honeymoon trip, we spent the most time in Santorini. I chose this purposefully because I knew we wanted to end the trip in a place with no agenda and full of relaxation.
Although Santorini is a tiny island, three days still wasn't enough time to explore all the areas we wanted to see. We missed going to Oia and I wouldve enjoyed spending more time exploring the beaches. Guess that means we'll have to go back soon :-)
Getting There & Around
Since we were heading to Santorni from Athens, we had two options: plane or ferry. Because we wanted to maximize our time, we chose to take the quick 40 minute flight to the island. I would advise pre-booking your transfer to your hotel before arrival as cabs are scarce and often do not want to make the drive to locations further from the airport. i.e. Imerovigli and Oia) Once we arrived at the hotel, we booked an ATV for the next few days as our mode of transportation. The rental cost of $40/day was completely worth being able to get around the island on our own time.
Where To Stay
We stayed in a beautiful suite at Above Blue Suites in Imerovigli for the duration of our trip. Imerovigli is a small village in the northern part of Santorini. Although most people flock to Oia to watch the sunsets, I think that because Imerovigli is located on the highest cliffs in the island, the sunsets were mesmerizing there. The views of the caldera from our balcony were also breathtaking. Imerovigli is very romantic and quiet compared to the hustle and bustle of Fira, the capital city. If you're looking for a more chill and relaxed area, I would recommend staying in Imerovigli. If you want to be near the hustle and bustle, definitely stay in Fira.
What We Did
RELAXED! Our main goal in Santorini was to unwind from all the craziness of the wedding and the quick paced travel we had completed. We took a walk from Imerovigli to Fira on the first night to window shop and have dinner. The walk was about an hour roundtrip so...be prepared. :-) One day after a luxurious cliffside couples massage at the Volcano View Hotel, we drove down to the black sand beaches of Perissa and Perivolos where we dined at a delicious beachside restaurant and splashed around in the crystal clear water.
Another day, we booked a catamaran tour through our hotel that sailed to the red beach Akrotiri the not-so- hot springs near the volcano that created the island. The tour also included a delicious lunch and all the white wine I could handle.
What We Ate
The food in Santorini was amazing and fresh! There are tons of cute little cafes and restaurants with amazing food and equally amazing views. We typically indulged in lots of pasta with seafood. (Marcus recommends the seafood pasta at Volcano Blue in Fira.) For some restaurants you'll definitely need to make a reservation for dinner. Our hotel got us a last minute reservation at the popular Argo restaurant in Fira and the food definitely lived up to the hype. Before the trip I made a reservation at Mezzo in Imerovigli, which also has great reviews. Unfortunately, I overlooked the confirmation email in the midst of our travels and when we arrived we found that our reservation was canceled. I was quite disappointed but we headed to Fira and found a cute restaurant with great views called Fanari. While there, we witnessed a surprise proposal and Marcus captured photos for the couple! I'd like to believe that we ended up right where we were meant to be :-)
Santorni was the perfect destination to culminate our honeymoon trip. I can't wait to get back and see more of the island!
